In Zwartsluis (The Netherlands), the name Bonsink is well-known in the marine business. Derk Bonsink and his company Bonsink Yacht Painters, has a longtime reputation for being one of the best in the field. Having spent most of his life on the water, Derk wanted to put his passion and knowledge of boats to good use and founded Serious Yachts a famous name in the national and international world of superyacht builders. The company is committed to building sophisticated yachts of the highest quality which stand out in the market.
At the 2012 Hiswa Boat Show in Amsterdam, WhisperPower met the owner of a new Serious 14m yacht, which at that time was under construction. The owner came to our stand in order get more information regarding generating electricity on board and the DC Power Cube concept caught his attention.
Arend Bonsink in conversation with Martijn Favot, CTO at WhisperPower
The owner especially liked the advantages of the DC-system: a small generator in size and weight but with 8 kW of power and adjustable speed allowing the optimum RPM of the generator to be set for each boat individually. Based on a 2-cylinder Kubota diesel engine the generator has minimal resonance and vibration. The DC PowerCube provides a powerful charger connected to the generator, ensuring fast charging of the 1000 Ah battery bank. The charger can also be connected to shore power. A 5 kW sine wave inverter is installed for powering appliances including 4 cook-plates (inductions) and any other equipment on board.
After seeing the system and a live demonstration of the concept, the choice was made by the customer: "Deliver!" In January 2013, the factory acceptance test (FAT) of the system was performed and checked by another Bonsink: Arend Bonsink from Aqua Service (www.aquaservice.nl) who is responsible for the technical installations of Serious Yachts.
