We were asked by the German shipyard Sirius Werft, to put together an electrical system for a 40 ft deck salon sailing yacht which was being designed and equipped for circumnavigation. The yacht would feature a full range of navigation and galley equipment including electric cooking appliances as there would be no gas on board. Furthermore, the owner wished to have all onboard comforts independent of shore power and to have silent times without running the generator. A 12 V system would simply not suffice.
We therefore designed a 24 V New School System (see single line diagram) made up for a 480 Ah Lithium Ion battery bank, a 7 kW AC PowerCube inverter to power the 230 V consumers during silent times, two DC PowerCube 24 V / 150 Ah chargers to quickly recharge the battery bank with up to 300 A and a M-GV 3 Piccolo DC generator which starts automatically when the battery needs to be recharged. In addition, the yacht has also been equipped with a wind generator, solar system and propeller generator, all of which are integrated into the WhisperPower system. The yacht was delivered in December 2019 and is now on her way to the Mediterranean. She will head for the Indian Ocean next year. We wish her and her crew fair winds and following seas.
