At the beginning of October, the Spirit 111, equipped with two WhisperPower 25 kW DC generators, was launched by Spirit Yachts in Ipswich in the UK. The Spirit 111 is a unique project. It is the largest wooden sloop-rigged sailing yacht to be built in the UK since Shamrock V in the 1930s. It is also one of the most environmentally friendly sailing yachts out there today.
In order to meet the client's vision to build an eco-friendly 34-metre sailing yacht designed for short-handed sailing, Spirit Yachts worked in collaboration with leading suppliers from both the maritime and mobile industries, amongst which included Torqeedo. For the Spirit 111, Torqeedo supplied the Deep Blue Hybrid electric propulsion and energy system that, in addition to the 100 kW electric motor, four 40 kW lithium battery banks and a propeller shaft generator, consists of two WhisperPower 350V DC variable speed diesel generators, each of which are 25 kW. This DC generator, also known as the Range Extender, has been designed in close collaboration with Torqeedo for the purpose of increasing the range of a yacht or ship equipped with a Torqeedo Deep Blue Hybrid system. The generator, controlled by the Advanced Hybrid Control System, automatically starts up whenever the electric motor and hotel load require more power than the batteries can deliver. It ensures worry-free backup power.
